A restart clears most hiccups, like a frozen screen or a connection that won't come back. A factory reset erases everything and returns your Cala to how it left the factory. Try a restart first.
Which one to use
- Restart if the screen is stuck or your Cala won't reconnect. Restart it from its screen, or switch off its circuit breaker for 30 seconds and back on. Your settings and Wi-Fi are kept.
- Clear lockouts if your Cala has stopped heating after the same problem happened several times.
- Factory reset only if you're passing the water heater to a new owner, or Cala support asks you to.
Restart
The quickest way: switch off your water heater's circuit breaker, wait 30 seconds, and switch it back on. Or restart it from your Cala's screen:
-
On your Cala's screen, press Down until SETTINGS is highlighted, then press Select. (If the screen is dark, press any button first to wake it.)
-
Press Down until ADVANCED is highlighted, then press Select.
-
Press Down until RESTART is highlighted, then press Select. Your Cala restarts right away. After a short wait, the Home screen comes back.

RESTART on the ADVANCED screen.
Clear lockouts
If the same problem happens again and again, your Cala may stop heating to protect itself (a lockout). Once the cause is fixed, you can clear it:
-
On your Cala's screen, go to SETTINGS, then ADVANCED.
-
Press Down until CLEAR LOCKOUTS is highlighted, then press Select.
If your Cala keeps locking out, restart it first. If it still happens, contact your installer or [email protected].
Factory reset
-
On your Cala's screen, go to SETTINGS, then ADVANCED.
-
Press Down until FACTORY RESET is highlighted. Check that it's the right row before you go on.

FACTORY RESET is the last item on the ADVANCED screen. -
Press Select. Your Cala erases its data and restarts into first-time setup.
-
Go through first-time setup on your Cala's screen, then connect it to the Cala app again (see Connect your Cala to the app and Wi-Fi). Once it's online, it updates its software again by itself.
If the screen doesn't respond
If the buttons don't do anything, you can factory reset your Cala while you turn it on. This does the same full reset as above.
-
Turn off power to your water heater at the circuit breaker.
-
Press and hold Back (the left outer button) on your Cala.
-
While you keep holding it, turn the power back on at the circuit breaker. (You may need a helper.)
-
Keep holding the button for 30 seconds, then let go.
-
Your Cala starts first-time setup. Set it up and connect it to the app again.
