It’s official: Cala units are leaving our facility and heading to homes across the Northeast. This is an incredible moment and the culmination of five years of hard work.
Here’s what’s gone into launching Cala
- We developed a new water heating architecture that combines sensing, data, predictive controls and precision hardware to heat water according to each home’s unique hot water habits and preferences.
- We conducted thousands of simulations, built dozens of lab prototypes, and did two rounds of field pilots to understand what worked in the real world and what didn’t.
- We developed our own cloud infrastructure, operating system, firmware, control boards, and software apps.
- We spent 17 months working with leading independent testing labs to ensure we achieved ENERGY STAR® qualification and met the industry's rigorous safety standards: UL60335-1, UL 60335-2-40, and UL174.
- We interviewed hundreds of homeowners and professional installers to understand the water heater purchase, installation, and ownership experience. We then surveyed thousands more to deepen our understanding further.
- We partnered with established manufacturers to build a robust supply chain with proven, world-class components.
- We built out our own manufacturing facility enabling us to closely manage quality, drive continuous innovation, and scale with confidence, without compromising quality
- We launched a brand that’s gained recognition from homeowners, professional installers, policymakers, and other stakeholders throughout the industry as a leader in the water heating space.
- And most importantly, we’ve earned the trust and support of the leading professional installers and forward-thinking homeowners who are purchasing and installing Cala.
What’s Next
Shipping first units in the Northeast is just the beginning. We’ll be ramping production in coming months to support deliveries along the east coast and then nationwide. If you’re outside our initial delivery area, stay tuned. Your reservation helps us prioritize where to go next, and you’ll be hearing from us at regular intervals as we expand.
As we grow, we’ll do over-the-air (OTA) software updates to add new features and enhance performance. We’ll launch partnerships in the energy and built environment to take full advantage of Cala’s ability to ensure comfortable hot water while saving energy and shifting when it’s used. We’ll engage with policymakers and other stakeholders to increase Cala customers’ access to energy price signals through demand response, virtual power plants, time-of-use rates, and more. Finally, we’ll be shipping new products to bring Cala’s technology platform to other applications and markets.
Shipping our first units was a milestone five years in the making. To the contractors, homeowners, consultants, advisors, suppliers, and many others who supported us along the way, thank you. With this milestone complete, we’re focused on scaling production, expanding reach, and delivering on the promise of intelligent water heating – and intelligent home infrastructure overall – to benefit our customers and the world around them.
