Cala is vertically integrated. We design our own hardware and software, and we assemble every Cala unit ourselves at our 25,000 square foot facility in Massachusetts — which is what “Proudly Designed and Assembled in the USA” actually means for us. Not a label. A building, a team, and a production line we run.

Why? Because to build high quality, best-in-class intelligent home infrastructure, the hardware, software, and manufacturing can’t evolve separately.

When all your teams work under one roof, ideas move from prototype to production in near real-time — hours and days, not months. Problems are solved with a walk on the factory floor, not over video calls across time zones. New features can be tested, refined, and shipped dramatically faster.

Vertical integration shapes the entire customer experience. Our engineering team designs everything from the hardware layout, heat pump loop, and assembly features to the onboard controls, back-end, and companion smartphone app. By owning the physical design alongside the digital interface and final assembly, we deliver a high quality, better-with-time experience — hardware that constantly evolves with software optimization, rather than a product that starts going obsolete from the day it’s installed.

The Assembly Process: From Raw Components to a Fully Built Intelligent System

Because we build our own systems, we know every detail inside and out, giving us tremendous control over quality, manufacturing throughput, and design iteration. Some of the key process steps include:

  • Condenser Winding: aluminum coil is wound around the carbon-steel storage tank. The heat pump moves hot refrigerant through these coils, transferring heat into the tank at 3-5x the efficiency of an electric or gas system.
  • Tank Foaming: every Cala tank is foamed with 2” of non-CFC polyurethane foam. While the equipment is standard, Cala’s dialed in the precise amount that gives our units the ability to store heat for a long period of time, minimizing standby losses.
  • Heat Pump Brazing: rather than open-flame brazing, Cala uses a programmable, flameless induction brazing system (the same core tech in an induction stove). This results in more consistent, higher quality joints that will stand the test of time.

Rigorous Attention to Detail and Quality

Every unit must pass through dozens of quality control checks during its assembly journey. Checks include, but are not limited to:

  • Wiring verification
  • Multiple heat pump leak tests
  • Plumbing leak check
  • High voltage test
  • System diagnostic test
  • Cosmetic inspection

If a unit doesn’t pass, it doesn’t ship.
